At my
school, there’s this thing called Brownstock. It’s basically a day, where every
band in the school gets fifteen minutes to do a set during school. Teachers can
decide if they want to bring their class to Brownstock. Most of them do,
because it’s an excuse to not have to do anything that day. So, we literally
just go to school to see a free concert.
People
want to go to! You’re probably like, why go? Why not just ditch? Well, it’s
because shenanigans go on at Brownstock: bands pick outrageous themes for their
attire, teachers run up on stage and do silly duets with students, and the
crowd gets pretty crazy sometimes.
It’s
also really cool to see bands that don’t play at popular venues. For example,
there are two hot spots for high school bands in the western suburbs; The Ashbary,
which is a very hipster hang out, but you get paid money to play there and
there’s a really nice venue, and The Church of Rock, which really has nothing
to do with church, it’s just the basement of a church.
I’ve
done shows at both place, and my friends’ bands play there a lot. It’s the
bands that don’t play there very often that are interesting to see. Also, the
WHOLE school gets to see you perform. It’s pretty nerve-wracking, you’re just
putting yourself out there to be judged by everyone in the school that you see
every day, but it’s so much fun.
The
most memorable moment is when I got to perform in Brownstock with my best
friend Mikey Spiller (commonly referred to as the, “Spikey Miller.”) Mikey and
I decided to dress in formal attire with old Christmas colored suite coats, Christmas
ties, and antlers. We. Rocked. It.
People
were coming up to me after telling me how good I was, and we got into every
school show after that. I “branded” myself as a talented singer. (I bet you
liked that Colleenoscopy.)
Check
this shit out, homie.
This picture was taken at Brownstock the first year I performed.
