Dark Fantasy: Mario Thompson

A song that is very meaningful to me is Kanye West’s “Dark Fantasy”. This is the first song on his fifth album entitled “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy”. I like this song because I feel like it speaks to me every time I hear it. It is actually one of the few songs that never get old to me. The song starts with Nicki Minaj introducing a story that is about to be told. In my opinion her words have a deeper meaning than just introducing a story; I feel as though she is speaking in code about information no one else knows about. I think she is trying to say that “everyone thinks they know what’s going on because of the stuff they hear, but this is actually what’s happening”. After the introduction the song begins with vocal harmonies from at least three or four different women including Nicki Minaj. This is the part of the song that speaks me because the vocals come together so beautifully that you can’t help but like the song. The vocals are the chorus, so when the chorus is over the beat drops in. Honestly my first few times hearing the song I had no idea that this would be the type of instrumental because the vocal harmonies give you more of a soul/R&B vibe. Another reason why I admire this record so much is because I know that Kanye himself produced it. Just knowing that he produced the record, put together the group of women for the harmonies, and still came through with good rhymes inspires me to put more time and effort into my own records.
