I had very good first impressions of the three characters in
this book. They all have good personalities and tell some very interesting
stories that make me never want to stop reading. The most interesting so far
was about a villager who got kidnapped and became a slave to a Muslim family.
He eventually escapes with his master’s daughter and returns to the village a
married man. I can tell that each of the characters in this book is a very
humble person; they all are very committed to the traditions and customs of
their village. They are actually what make the story fun to read. One thing
that I think someone wouldn’t realize right away about these characters is that
they all seem very scared. People in America don’t understand exactly how
dangerous Africa is. The characters have so much to worry about when it comes
to staying safe and healthy. They are all very young when the story is taking
place so it is actually pretty normal for them to be frightened easily. For
example, in the story one of the characters encountered a hyena while herding
goats. He didn’t know what the animal was so he was very timid. I can relate to this because when I was young I
was afraid of animals that I wasn’t familiar with. In my honest opinion, if
these characters came to life I think I would get along just fine with either
of them. They all seem very down to earth. I chose this book because it seemed
most interesting of the three. All three of the books that were listed as my
options all tell the same kind of story, but this novel seems like it has more
adventure to it than the other two. This book actually seems like the type of
book I would normally read.
